SUMMARY:Tom Rush & Loudon Wainwright III
DESCRIPTION:An evening with two legendary singer songwriters filled with story-telling\, the sweet melancholy of ballads and the passion of gritty blues.\n\nTom Rush\n\n\n\n\n\n“It was summer entertainment at its quintessential best. Evergreen\, ever-growing veteran … Rush’s extraordinary stage presence captivated the audience. His distinctive baritone simply skimmed over the hushed crowd toward the open sea.” — THE BOSTON GLOBE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTom Rush is a gifted musician and performer\, whose shows offer a musical celebration… a journey into the tradition and spectrum of what music has been\, can be\, and will become. His distinctive guitar style\, wry humor and warm\, expressive voice have made him both a legend and a lure to audiences around the world. \n\n\n\nRush’s impact on the American music scene has been profound. He helped shape the folk revival in the ’60s and the renaissance of the ’80s and ’90s\, his music having left its stamp on generations of artists. James Taylor told Rolling Stone\, “Tom was not only one of my early heroes\, but also one of my main influences.” Country music star Garth Brooks has credited Rush with being one of his top five musical influences. Rush has long championed emerging artists. His early recordings introduced the world to the work of Joni Mitchell\, Jackson Browne and James Taylor\, and in more recent years his Club 47 concerts have brought artists such as Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin to wider audiences when they were just beginning to build their own reputations. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLoudon Wainwright III\n\n\n\n\n\n“Mr. Wainwright has proved to be far and away the most candid diarist among the singer-songwriters who…brought confessional poetry into popular song…. Mr. Wainwright wrings more human truth out of his contradiction than any other songwriter of his generation.” – New York Times\, Stephen Holden \nLoudon Wainwright III\, a Grammy-award winning singer\, song-writer and performer. Having recently turned 75 years old\, Loudon has always been a keen observer of his own aging process\, documenting it with an honesty that few songwriters would dare use. On his latest release\, Lifetime Achievement\, Loudon has many beautifully reflective songs including “How Old Is 75?” \nAfter thirty albums\, countless concert appearances\, a Grammy\, many film and TV roles\, and songs recorded by such artists as Johnny Cash\, Mose Allison\, Bonnie Raitt and his son Rufus\, Loudon sounds as engaged and passionate as ever. His singular talent as our foremost six-string analyst and tragicomedian extraordinaire is not only undiminished but hitting new heights of what NPR calls his “unmatched wit and wisdom” on Lifetime Achievement. \n \nTickets are on sale for Friends on 3/7 at 12pm; general on sale is 3/10 at 12pm.

SUMMARY:Iris DeMent
DESCRIPTION:With an inimitable voice and unforgettable melodies rooted in hymns\, gospel\, and old country music\, Iris DeMent is simply one of the finest singer-songwriters in America as well as one of our fiercest advocates for human rights. On her transcendent new record\, Workin’ On A World\, Iris DeMent faces the modern world — as it is right now — with its climate catastrophe\, pandemic illness\, and epidemic of violence and social injustice — and not only asks us how we can keep working towards a better world\, but implores us to love each other\, despite our very different ways of seeing. Her songs are her way of healing our broken inner and outer spaces. \nHer debut record Infamous Angel\, which just celebrated its 30th anniversary\, was recently named one of the “greatest country albums of all time” by Rolling Stone\, and the two albums that followed\, My Life and The Way I Should\, were both nominated for GRAMMYs. From there\, DeMent released three records on her own label\, Flariella Records\, the most recent of which\, The Trackless Woods (2015)\, was hailed as “a quietly powerful triumph” by The Guardian. DeMent’s songs have also been featured in film (True Grit) and television (The Leftovers) and recorded by numerous artists. Fittingly\, she received the Americana Music Trailblazer Award in 2017. \nWorkin’ On A World\, her seventh album\, started with the worry that woke DeMent up after the 2016 elections: how can we survive this? “Every day some new trauma was being added to the old ones that kept repeating themselves\, and like everybody else\, I was just trying to bear up under it all\,” she recalls. She returned to a truth she had known since childhood: music is medicine. “My mom always had a way of finding the song that would prove equal to whatever situation we were facing. Throughout my life\, songs have been lending me a hand. Writing songs\, singing songs\, putting them on records\, has been a way for me to extend that hand to others.” \nWith grace\, courage\, and soul\, Iris shares 13 anthems — love songs\, really — to and for our broken inner and outer worlds. DeMent sets the stage for the album with the title track in which she moves from a sense of despair towards a place of promise. “Now I’m workin’ on a world I may never see / Joinin’ forces with the warriors of love / Who came before and will follow you and me.” \n \n\nWith opening act Ana Egge.\n“Ana is the folk Nina Simone.” – Lucinda Williams \n \nEgge burst onto the music scene with her debut album\, 1997’s River Under the Road\, which All Music noted “signals the arrival of a unique songwriting perspective and moving new voice.” She was named “Best Singer Songwriter” and “Best Folk Artist” the following year at the Austin Music Awards. Since then\, Egge has consistently garnered critical praise for her music\, and has worked with producers Steve Earle\, Joel Plaskett\, Alec Spiegelman\, and Stewart Lerman and recorded with Billy Strings\, Anais Mitchell and Iris DeMent. Her songs have been licensed for TV shows on MTV and Showtime and recorded by other influential roots musicians like Dave Alvin\, Laurie Lewis and Slaid Cleaves. No Depression hailed her 2017 release\, White Tiger\, as “nothing less than a balm for the soul” and Folk Alleyproclaimed that 2019’s Is It the Kiss brought “great\, honest songs to the collective consciousness.” \nTickets are on sale for Friends on 2/28 at 12pm; general on sale is 3/3 at 12pm.

SUMMARY:The Weight Band featuring members of The Band & Levon Helm Band
DESCRIPTION:“The Weight Band keep The Band’s flame burning brightly while retaining their own originality.” – Americana UK \nPerforming original songs as well as classics of The Band\, The Weight Band is led by Jim Weider\, a 15-year former member of The Band and the Levon Helm Band. The Weight Band originated in 2013 inside the famed Woodstock barn of Levon Helm. Weider was inspired by Helm to carry on the musical legacy of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group. \nOn their new album\, Shines Like Gold\, The Weight Band presents a dynamic set of classic Americana that draws upon roadhouse rock\, funky swamp pop\, blues\, country soul and folk music. Composed of band leader\, renowned guitarist Jim Weider (The Band\, Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble Band\, Jim Weider Band)\, keyboardist Brian Mitchell (Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble Band)\, bassist Albert Rogers (Jim Weider Band\, Jimmy Vivino)\, drummer Michael Bram (Jason Mraz) and keyboardist Matt Zeiner (Dickey Betts)\, the veteran quintet shares a deep appreciation and knowledge for this music\, which Weider describes as the “Woodstock Sound.” The Weight Band continues to serve as its torchbearer\, with Shines Like Gold representing a sublime example of these masterful roots musicians at work. \nThe Weight Band recorded Shine Like Gold live at Clubhouse Studios in Rhinebeck\, NY\, over four days – with minimal rehearsal during the height of the pandemic in 2020. Producer Colin Linden\, an award-winning musician and Weider’s longtime collaborator and co-writer on several of the album tracks\, was in Nashville. The arrangement\, however\, worked out perfectly\, according to Weider. “He had a big hand and footprint on this record. Weider added\, “We go back\, so there is a comfortableness working with him.” \nIn 2017\, The Weight Band performed on the PBS series Infinity Hall Live. The following year\, their self-produced debut\, World Gone Mad\, was released to strong reviews. Billboard called it “excellent” while Goldmine Magazine hailed World Gone Mad as one of the year’s best indie albums. Most recently\, the Weight Band put out Acoustic Live in 2021. This 11-track album features five songs recorded at the Big Pink on October 25\, 2019\, and six songs recorded the following night in Levon Helm’s barn/studio. Performances include memorable versions of “World Gone Mad\,” Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisited\,” Jerry Garcia’s “Deal\,” and several Band covers. \nThe Weight Band’s origins are tied to Woodstock and some of its most famous inhabitants\, The Band. Weider\, a Woodstock native\, served as The Band’s lead guitarist from 1985-2000\, following Robbie Robertson’s departure. In the late 00s\, he replaced Jimmy Vivino in the Levon Helm Band\, which already included Mitchell. The connections extend further\, as Rogers shared the stage with Helm and Hudson while in The Jim Weider Band and Bram drummed in the Chris O’Leary Band\, an off-shoot of Helm’s band The Barnburners. \nFollowing Helm’s death in 2012\, Weider performed a few “Songs of The Band” concerts\, which included Vivino\, Byron Isaacs\, Randy Ciarlante and Garth Hudson. The shows were so well received that Weider started the first version of The Weight Band with Ciarlante\, Isaacs\, Mitchell\, and keyboardist Marty Grebb. Over the next several years\, the group shifted from playing mainly Band songs to their originals. Along the way\, band membership shifted too. When Isaacs left for the Lumineers\, Rogers came aboard. Bram joined the group after Ciarlante’s departure. Following World Gone Mad’s release\, Grebb bowed out and Zeiner stepped in. \n \nTickets are on sale for Friends on 1/31 at 12pm; general on sale is 2/3 at 12pm.

SUMMARY:The Felice Brothers
DESCRIPTION:A folk-Americana-rock-country band with deep roots in varied genres\, The Felice Brothers are what Rolling Stone lauds as “musician’s musicians” and poets. Indeed\, Ian has proven his pedigree as a poet with the publication of his limited-edition collection of poetry Hotel Swampland (2017). \nThe Felice Brothers\, Ian (guitar and lead vocals) and James (multi-instrumentalist and vocals)\, hail from the Catskills\, NY\, where their early songs echoed off subway walls and kept company with travelers and vagrants. Their current lineup\, with the addition of bassist and inaugural female Felice member Jesske Hume (Conor Oberst\, Jade Bird) and drummer Will Lawrence (also a singer/songwriter) as their rhythm section\, promises to be the best yet.   \nIn\, From Dreams to Dust\, their eighth and most recent studio album\, the band’s exuberance to be together doing what they do so well is palpable. Nathaniel Walcott (trumpet) and Mike Mogis (pedal steel player) act as an accompaniment throughout the tracks\, the latter of whom mixed From Dreams to Dust\, which was produced by The Felice Brothers. \nIan wants his songs to do for others what his favorite songs do for him\, which is to help listeners get through hard times. “The greatest thing\,” he states\, “would be for people to be inspired by our music in a positive way.” But for Ian\, doing so involves not turning away from adversities but rather requires facing harsh truths for the purpose of nourishing us with these digestive realities that might help us work productively through otherwise demoralizing and debilitating prospects. Thus\, as the speaker of “To-Do List” writes a plan\, or perhaps a bucket list\, as “the plague goes by\,” the speaker resolves to “Befriend an Unfortunate lunatic” and “Bring Flowers to the Sick” as well as absorb the light from the “amorous rays” of the sun. \nThe songs in From Dreams to Dust ask us to pay close attention to Ian’s narrative techniques and literary devices\, transforming his songs into poetry and short stories. “Ian is so good about taking poetry\, novels\, folk art\, and a huge wealth of artistic knowledge and metabolizing those things into music that is never academic or stilted but feels so alive\,” explains James on his brother’s literary prowess. \n \nTickets are on sale for Friends on 4/12 at 12pm; general on sale is 4/14 at 12pm.

SUMMARY:Suzanne Vega - An Intimate Evening of Songs and Stories
DESCRIPTION:Suzanne will be joined on stage by her longtime guitarist\, Gerry Leonard\, performing a career-spanning show including favorites like Tom’s Diner\, Luka\, and more! \nVega emerged as a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s when\, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar\, she sang what has been called contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Since the release of her self-titled\, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album\, she has given sold-out concerts in many of the world’s best-known venues. Known for performances that convey deep emotion\, Vega’s distinctive\, “clear\, unwavering voice” (Rolling Stone) has been described as “a cool\, dry sandpaper-brushed near-whisper” by The Washington Post\, with NPR Music noting that she “has been making vital\, inventive music” throughout the course of her decades-long career. \nBearing the stamp of a masterful storyteller who “observes the world with a clinically poetic eye” (The New York Times)\, Vega’s songs have tended to focus on city life\, ordinary people and real-world subjects. Notably succinct and understated\, her work is immediately recognizable—as utterly distinct and thoughtful as it was when her voice was first heard on the radio over 30 years ago.

SUMMARY:Al Stewart with his band The Empty Pockets
DESCRIPTION:After Al’s US tour in 2019 with his band The Empty Pockets\, he spent most of 2020 and 2021 sidelined due the COVID-19 pandemic. But in 2022\, he came back full force with a string of sold out shows in the United States and United Kingdom\, and he even made his debut in Israel.  In 2023\, he’ll continue his trek with several shows throughout the United States.  He will be playing his old favorites\, like Year Of The Cat\, Time Passages\, On the Border\, Nostradamus and Roads To Moscow\, along with selections from his deep catalogue. \nThe Scottish-born singer-songwriter has released nearly 20 introspective and lyrically powerful records featuring brilliant backing musicians (Jimmy Page\, Phil Collins\, Richard Thompson\, Peter White\, etc.). His biggest platinum successes\, “Year Of The Cat” and “Time Passages”\, were released in 1976 & 1978 respectively. He’s had several top 20 singles\, including the above-mentioned titles\, as well as “On the Border” and “Song On The Radio”. \nIn Al’s own Words: “I’m just a folk singer that is interested in history and wine that got lucky with some hit records!  It’s as simple as that really. I was always a huge music fan and originally\, I had wanted to be Brian Jones and then Bob Dylan\, but those two jobs were already taken. And in many ways\, I’m still pretty much the same troubadour that I was back in 1965. I still get a kick out of hearing the Zombies\, Hendrix or They Might be Giants on the radio.”
