On Your Radar with WFUV's John Platt - featuring Caravan of Thieves, Roosevelt Dime & Matt Nakoa
Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 8 pm

WFUV's John Platt knows a unique artist when he hears one. And this year's On Your Radar artists are no exception.

CARAVAN OF THIEVES wins praise for their unique blend of gypsy swing and popular music. Their newest album, KISS KISS, combines the dark humor and sarcastic social commentary of their three previous releases with an added emphasis on love and all the beauty and danger it brings. The music hearkens back to a day gone by -- the swing era -- when artists such as Duke Ellington and Django Reinhardt brought elegance and style along with a fun and free spirit and precision craftsmanship to their music.

ROOSEVELT DIME has a sound that some would call Rock & Roll, others Americana, but “Mardi-Grass” is more like it—a bedrock of New Orleans rhythms that brings driving, melodic banjo, fat-back blues guitar, pure honky-tonk harmonies, and deliciously dirty R&B vocals along for the ride—it makes for a groove so inspired the New York Times has called Roosevelt Dime “a perpetual crowd pleaser.”

MATT NAKOA began composing music as a teenager. While attending Berklee College of Music he worked alongside a who’s who of soon-to-be industry darlings, including St. Vincent, Esperanza Spaulding, and members of the bands Karmin and Lucius. Matt's first solo release, 2012’s  Light In The Dark, was received by fans as an eclectic pop/rock masterpiece while Matt’s latest studio album,  A Dozen Other Loves (2014), explores a mainly acoustic palette. This acoustic avenue has led to steady folk radio airplay and performances with veteran songsmiths Patty Larkin, Ellis Paul, and Tom Rush. An engaging performer, Matt tours internationally, recently giving concerts at The White House and throughout India. Matt is a 2014 Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Winner and a Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Most Wanted Artist.
